St. Procopius Kermes: A Celebration of Faith, Culture, and Community

The St. Procopius Kermes, held each summer in Chicago’s historic Pilsen neighborhood, is the oldest and most beloved socio-cultural and spiritual event in the area. Since its inception in 1975, the Kermes has served as a vibrant expression of faith, tradition, and unity—bringing together generations of parishioners, neighbors, and friends.

Originally organized by the Mexican community of St. Procopius Parish, the Kermes began as a humble outdoor street fair to support the church’s mission. Over the decades, it has evolved into a cornerstone celebration that beautifully reflects the values of joy, generosity, and inclusion that define our parish community.

The event takes place during the novena in preparation for the feast of the Virgen de San Juan de los Lagos, a sacred time marked by prayer, reflection, and devotion. A moving procession through the streets of Pilsen, led by the statue of the Virgin, is a powerful symbol of the enduring and heartfelt faith of our community.

Each year, the Kermes features:

  • Authentic Mexican cuisine

  • Live music and cultural performances

  • Family-friendly entertainment and games

  • Community raffles and artisan vendors

Beyond its joyful atmosphere, the Kermes plays a vital role in supporting the parish’s programs and initiatives, helping to sustain our spiritual and outreach missions year-round.

The St. Procopius Kermes is more than an event—it is a living tradition that honors our past, celebrates our present, and builds hope for our future. We invite you to join us as we continue to share faith, food, and fellowship in the heart of Pilsen.
